CITY OF WPB PAVES WAY FOR PARKING IMPROVEMENTS

Under new leadership, parking department rolls out enhancements to safety, security and availability

City of West Palm Beach residents, visitors and business owners can expect to see exciting new changes to parking safety, security and availability to improve users’ overall experience. The announcement comes on the heels of several studies of city parking, mobility, and bikeability and, also, and the hiring of a new Parking Systems Administrator last year, Ed Davis.

“The City of West Palm Beach is a bustling hub for businesses and residents,” said Mayor Jeri Muoio. “As the county seat-- and one that continues to grow and improve what we have to offer-- we are keeping the needs of locals, businesses, and visitors at the forefront of our future, and parking is part of that future. After a series of studies and feedback from stakeholders and the community, we are paving the way for purposeful improvements. Noticeable changes are being made and will continue to be made to offer more parking safety, security and availability.”

In keeping with Mayor Muoio’s vision of a city built and designed with quality of life at the forefront, improvements to parking include or will soon include:

  • Upgraded LED lighting in City owned garages;
  • Increased security patrols;
  • New wayfinding signs;
  • A mobile app to find available spots;
  • The availability of on-demand, security personnel to escort individuals on the street and within the garage;
  • New ticket machines for expedited service.

Parking enforcement officers are already traveling by Segway and foot to engage and educate, in addition to enforcing parking rules. Along with conducting enforcement, the officers serve as a welcoming authority to provide direction on the City’s available parking and best practices, and they provide an added layer of surveillance on the main streets including Clematis Street.

“We are excited about the direction of parking administration,” said Davis. “We are making much-needed and deserved improvements to the City’s parking which include encouraging our representatives on the street to be more involved in the community. While they are there to enforce the rules of parking, they are also there to be a resource, directing visitors to convenient parking and sharing the rules in advance to encourage compliance.”

An Indianapolis native with nearly 25 years of experience in parking administration, Davis most recently worked as associate director of the Texas Southern University Department of Public Safety and, prior, served as Broward County’s manager of parking operations. Davis is a U.S. Army veteran who proudly served for more than 20 years.

Parking Administrator Ed Davis

While future mobility trends are moving toward mass transit, walking and biking, making strategic space for commuters and cars remains a priority for the City. Davis oversees the entire parking operations throughout the City, including on-street, lot parking and garage parking. The City-owned parking spots that are open to the public are concentrated downtown and include more than 2,500 parking spaces in five garages, 1,600 metered on-street spaces, and 200 surface lot spaces. The City’s garages are Banyan, on the corner of Banyan and Olive; City Center, on the corner of Banyan and Dixie; Evernia, on the corner of Evernia and Olive; Sapodilla, on the corner of Clematis Street and Sapodilla; and Clematis, on the corner of Banyan and Clematis.

“Mayor Muoio challenged me to create a more progressive means of managing parking, now and for the future,” continued Davis. “I am proud of what we have already done and excited about the changes that are coming, including improved lighting, wayfinding and better signage. There are major upgrades in the works, in addition to some minor tweaks.”

Since Davis came on board, he has focused on improvements to safety and security, as well as availability. At the beginning of April, City employees began parking on the third floor or higher inside the City Center garage, to accommodate guests who use the garage for shorter downtown visits. In addition, the City is moving the vehicles it stores as evidence in ongoing criminal cases, which are currently stored in the Sapodilla garage. The move is expected to free up nearly 100 additional spaces.

For more information on the ongoing parking improvements, visit wpb.org/parking, or call (561) 822-1500.
