Mayor Jeri Muoio Awarded National Honor for Climate Protection Efforts

Recognition Announced at U.S. Conference of Mayors

86th Annual Meeting in Boston

West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio has been awarded a “Large City Honorable Mention” in the 2018 Mayors’ Climate Protection Awards, an initiative sponsored by The U.S. Conference of Mayors and Walmart. The announcement was made during the Mayors’ Climate Protection Awards luncheon, which was held in conjunction with USCM’s 86th Annual Meeting in Boston, MA. Celebrating its 12th anniversary, this mayors’ awards program recognizes mayors for their energy and climate protection efforts, selected by an independent panel of judges from a pool of mayor applicants.

“We are committed to enhancing the viability of West Palm Beach as a modern model of healthy, environmentally progressive, ecologically sustainable and resilient urban living,” said West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio. “We are realizing this through key initiatives including our very innovative Stormwater Master Plan which will help us reach our target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.”

In 2014, the City committed to a vision for its stormwater program through the development of a holistic Stormwater Master Plan (SWMP). The SWMP is the first stormwater plan of its kind in South Florida that not only includes traditional development of capital improvement projects but also drives the City’s vision to proactively modernize and adjust to the new realities of climate change specific to stormwater management. The SWMP leverages the best of traditional technologies and integrates the use of resiliency planning and catered technologies to better prepare the City for future conditions. Some of these technologies include green infrastructure and low impact development, as well as modernized methods to better manage hydrology, hydraulics, and water quality throughout the City.

“It is really quite an honor for West Palm Beach to be recognized for our climate protection efforts in the large city category, sharing the Honorable Mention Award with the likes of New York City, Phoenix and Minneapolis,” said Resilience and Climate Change Manager Penni Redford.

“U.S. mayors are well into their second decade of climate leadership, showing others that there are effective and affordable responses to our climate challenges,” said Tom Cochran, CEO and Executive Director of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. “The creativity and imagination in crafting these local initiatives and strategies should serve as an inspiration to others, especially for leaders in our nation’s capital.”

Congratulations to the Mayors of Austin, TX and Schenectady, NY who took home top honors.

City Breaks Ground on

'Clematis Streetscape' Project

Exciting Infrastructure and Beautification Changes Starting on City’s Most Iconic Street

City Administrator; Raphael Clemente, DDA Executive Dir.; Christina Lambert, WPB City Commissioner; WPB Mayor Jeri Muoio; Jon Ward, WPB CRA Executive Dir.; Paula Ryan, WPB City Commissioner; Marc Kleisley, Burkhardt Construction; Allison Justice, WPB CRA Sr. Project Manager.

West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio, City Commissioners and representatives from the West Palm Beach Community Redevelopment Agency broke ground on the anticipated Clematis Streetscape project on Monday, June 4 in the 300 block of Clematis Street between S. Dixie Highway and S. Olive Ave. City leaders, along with downtown stakeholders and business owners, attended and officially commenced the work by putting the ceremonial shovels in the dirt.

The Clematis Streetscape project will make design improvements to Clematis Street that will elevate the experience and overall quality of life for Clematis merchants, residents and visitors.  After several public input meetings with Clematis Street merchants, other area merchants, stakeholders, residents and visitors, the City Commission voted to implement recommendations from the award-winning design team, Dover, Kohl & Partners.

Project highlights include:

  • Creating a curbless street that prioritizes the pedestrian;
  • Narrowing the traffic lanes to slow travel speed for cars;
  • Adding high-visibility crosswalks and mid-block crossings;
  • Adding more regularly spaced shade trees;
  • Widening the sidewalk to allow more walkway space, dining space and furnished seating space;
  • Reducing parking spaces to make room for “people space.

One of the primary goals of the project is to shorten the construction schedule and minimize disruption to valued merchants with a multi-phased approach for the street improvements. The first phase of the project will take place on the 300 block of Clematis Street between S. Dixie Highway and S. Olive Avenue, with estimated completion in October 2018. Phase two of the project is expected to begin in the summer of 2019.

***NOTE:  The 300 block of Clematis Street is closed only to automobile traffic.  Sidewalks and businesses will remain open during construction.***

Playhouses Settle in at Sunset

City of West Palm Beach’s “Summer in Paradise” (S.I.P.) Campaign Kicks Off with Fanfare; Additional Activities and Selfie Spots Also Revealed

As the sun set during the most recent Clematis by Night, the much-anticipated “Fairy Tale Playhouses” were revealed. The child-size homes, reflecting beloved and popular fairy tales from all over the globe, are designed to entertain and educate. As part of the City of West Palm Beach’s “Summer in Paradise" (S.I.P.) campaign, the playhouses were painted and adorned by local artists and will later be auctioned off in support of 15 local nonprofits. The campaign is in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Palm Beach County, whose mission is to build simple, decent and affordable housing for low to very low-income families around the world. Other key “Summer in Paradise” elements, including larger-than-life teacups and saucers, and a cannot-miss oversize pair of shades, were also revealed.

“Our ‘Summer in Paradise’ campaign does an excellent job of offering residents and visitors non-stop fun and entertainment and, also, opportunities for families to make meaningful summer memories," said West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio. "I am pleased with the campaign's continued focus on community partnerships, creativity, and philanthropy. This year's 'Summer in Paradise' is sure to be another huge success, and I look forward to seeing everyone there!”

Photo opps and selfie spots are also a priority in this year’s “Summer in Paradise” lineup. The City brought back the “Big Storybook,” outlining all involved in the community activation, noting how each artist, fairy tale and nonprofit is paired. New this year are the “Mad Hatter Teacups,” which were once car tires that have been upcycled into cup and saucer sets spread on the Great Lawn. The installation was inspired by “Alice in Wonderland”’s famous tea. Also new this year, as part of the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County's “Shades of Culture” advertising campaign, visitors to the waterfront are in for a huge selfie treat. The Council commissioned an experiential activation, where residents and visitors can interact with the nonprofit’s signature aqua sunglasses – at a larger-than-life level. The oversize sunnies – coming in at 8 ft. x 20 ft. - will be on display on the Great Lawn throughout

“Summer in Paradise.” The glasses were created by local artist Frank Navarrete, who is also designed a playhouse on behalf of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League.

Additional waterfront activities include: “StoryVille,” a create your own life-size fable activity; “FlaminGO Croquet,” complete with an “Alice in Wonderland” theme and flamingo mallets; and “Fairy Tale Trivia Tuesdays.” The Fairy Tale Playhouses are open daily from noon – 9 p.m. and all other activities nightly from 5 – 9 p.m. As is summer tradition, the City will also expand its Clematis by Night offerings, booking two times the bands and extending entertainment hours to 10 p.m.

“This is a local activation, with community at the heart,” said Mary Pinak, Community Events Manager for the City of West Palm Beach Department of Parks and Recreation. “Through the collaboration of 15 local nonprofits and 15 local artists, we have built something incredible – providing entertainment and a significant spotlight on affordable housing. We encourage everyone to come have a ‘sip’ of summer – see the playhouses, play the additional free games and enjoy all that the City of West Palm Beach has to offer.”

This year summer will also extend beyond the shore, as fans of the “Fairy Tale Playhouses” can get their additional fill by visiting two more child-size homes. The “Thumbelina” house, designed by internationally acclaimed artist Frankie Cihi, is sponsored by Related Companies and will delight small shoppers while on display on the square at CityPlace. At the end of the summer, it will be donated to Quantum House. For more information, please visit: cityplace.com/community.

Visitors wishing to try their luck on winning a playhouse can take visit the Palm Beach Outlets and register to win the Go Coastal Playhouse painted by artist Melissa Rinaldi on display there. For more information on how to register to win, please visit: palmbeachoutlets.com. Visitors can travel to both locations from the waterfront collection for free, via the City’s trolley system. For more information on stops, routes and frequency, please visit wpb.org/About/Transportation-Services.

The “Fairy Tale Playhouses” are on display on the West Palm Beach waterfront at 101 N. Clematis Street, West Palm Beach Florida, through July 26, when they will be auctioned off in support of charity. The playhouses, and all on-going, daily activities, are free.
